Large Painted Turtle

It is hard to distinguish males from females but females grow to a larger size than males - up to 25 cm or 11 inches in length. If you see one that large chances are you are looking at a female. It is interesting that the female lays eggs on land. Turtles overwinter in the mud at the bottom of the pond.
